Possible Causes
Failed evaporator fan motor, Obstructed fan blades by ice or wiring, Loose fan connector, Faulty fan driver circuit on main control board
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety: Disconnect power before working inside the cabinet. Keep fingers clear of fan blades.
E6 is typically related to the evaporator or circulation fan not operating correctly.
- Step 1 – Check for airflow: With the door open and unit powered (briefly), listen for the fan behind the rear interior panel. If silent or noisy, unplug and continue.
- Step 2 – Access fan: Remove shelves and the rear interior panel to expose the evaporator fan assembly.
- Step 3 – Inspect for obstructions: Look for ice buildup, loose wires, or insulation contacting the fan blades. Clear any obstructions and ensure the fan spins freely by hand.
- Step 4 – Electrical check: Reseat the fan connector. With the unit unplugged, measure fan motor resistance; an open circuit indicates a failed motor.
- Step 5 – Replace fan motor: If the motor is seized or open, replace the evaporator fan motor assembly. Transfer any mounting grommets or brackets from the old motor.
- Step 6 – Control board diagnosis: If a known-good fan does not run and E6 persists, the main control board fan output may be defective and should be replaced by a technician.
