Possible Causes
Inadequate drying after use, Damaged porcelain or paint coating, Use of harsh cleaners, High humidity storage conditions
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Ensure the smoker is unplugged and cool before cleaning or treating rust.
Steps to address rust:
- Remove loose rust: Use a non-metallic scrub pad or fine steel wool to remove surface rust from racks and interior surfaces.
- Clean and dry: Wipe down with a damp cloth, then dry thoroughly.
- Season interior: Lightly coat interior surfaces (not heating element) and racks with a high-smoke-point cooking oil and run the smoker at moderate temperature for an hour to create a protective layer.
- Replace severely rusted parts: If racks or the water pan are heavily pitted, replace them with Landmann replacements.
- Improve storage: Store the smoker under a cover and in a dry location when not in use.
