A01
Burner locks out shortly after a start attempt, with a red lockout light on the burner control, and the furnace does not ignite.
Failed Ignition Lockout
A02
Burner locks out during operation after the flame has been established, with the red lockout light on, and the furnace stops mid-cycle.
Flame Loss During Run
A03
Burner locks out with pre-ventilation but no flame attempt; the control indicates a safety lockout before ignition.
Pre-ignition Safety Lockout
A04
Burner locks out with an indication of overheat or safety thermostat trip; the furnace is very hot to the touch.
High Limit or Overheat Lockout
A05
Burner control indicates lockout due to an internal fault; no start sequence occurs, and the red light illuminates immediately.
Internal Control Box Failure
A06
Burner attempts to start but shuts down with a code indicating ignition failure or no flame detected.
Ignition Failure / No Flame Signal
A07
Burner locks out with an indication of flame present at the wrong time (flame signal before or after the allowed window).
False Flame Detection
A08
Burner stops with a code indicating an air pressure or fan fault during operation.
Combustion Air Fan / Pressure Fault
A09
Burner locks out with an indication of too many restart attempts or repeated flame failures.
Repeated Flame Failure Lockout
A10
Burner control indicates lockout due to low or missing line voltage during operation.
Low Voltage / Power Supply Fault
A11
Burner locks out with a code indicating the safety chain is open (limit, door switch, or external safety open).
Open Safety Circuit
A12
Burner indicates lockout due to an internal temperature sensor or control overheating.
Control Overtemperature Fault
A13
Burner locks out with a code indicating a pre-purge or post-purge timing error.
Purge Cycle Fault
A14
Burner indicates lockout due to an incorrect sequence of safety inputs (e.g., a limit opens at the wrong time).
Safety Sequence Error
A15
Burner locks out with a code indicating a photocell short circuit or sensor failure.
Flame Sensor Circuit Fault
A16
Burner indicates lockout due to too many resets or manual interventions in a short period.
Excessive Reset Lockout
E01
The electronic display on the Riello furnace shows E01; the burner does not start, indicating a lockout condition.
General Ignition Failure (Electronic Code)
E02
The display shows E02; the burner starts then stops, indicating flame loss during operation.
Flame Loss During Operation (Electronic Code)
E03
The display shows E03, indicating an overheat or high limit trip on the Riello furnace.
Overheat / High Limit Trip (Electronic Code)
E04
The display shows E04, indicating a flue gas or draft fault.
Flue Gas / Draft Fault
E05
The display shows E05, indicating an air pressure switch or fan proving fault.
Air Pressure / Fan Proving Fault
E06
The display shows E06, indicating a flame sensor or photocell error.
Flame Detection Error
E07
Display shows E07, indicating a communication error between the furnace control and Riello burner.
Control Communication Fault
E08
Display shows E08, indicating a low water or flow fault on a hydronic Riello furnace/boiler.
Low Water / Flow Fault
E09
Display shows E09, indicating a sensor error (supply temperature sensor or return sensor).
Temperature Sensor Fault
Symptom
Burner lockout occurs mostly in very cold weather, and the furnace struggles to start.
Cold Weather Fuel / Combustion Issue
Symptom
Furnace blower runs, but the burner does not fire; air from the vents is cool.
Blower-Only Operation
Symptom
The burner ignites, but the flame is very yellow and unstable.
Poor Combustion / Incorrect Air-Fuel Mix
Symptom
The burner starts and stops repeatedly within a few seconds, never establishing a stable flame.
Failed Flame Stabilization
Symptom
The furnace burner fan runs, but there is no oil flow (no sound of combustion, no pressure at the nozzle).
Fuel Pump / Oil Supply Failure
Symptom
The furnace is very noisy during operation, with whistling or high-pitched sounds coming from the burner.
Combustion Air Noise / Resonance
Symptom
The furnace makes a loud rumbling or booming noise at startup.
Delayed Ignition / Combustion Instability
Symptom
The furnace produces a strong oil smell around the burner or in the room.
Oil Leakage / Incomplete Combustion Odor
Symptom
The furnace runs, but the carbon monoxide detector in the home alarms.
Unsafe Combustion / CO Production
Symptom
The furnace runs, but the house does not heat adequately, and the burner cycles frequently.
Insufficient Heat Output
Symptom
The furnace short cycles (turns on and off frequently) without reaching the set temperature.
Short Cycling
Symptom
The furnace starts but produces no flame; you hear the fan and possibly the pump, then it shuts down.
No Flame on Start
Symptom
The furnace trips the household circuit breaker when the burner starts.
Electrical Short / Overcurrent
Symptom
The furnace vibrates excessively when the burner is running.
Vibration / Imbalance
Symptom
The furnace will not start at all; there is no burner operation, no attempt to ignite, but power is present.
No-Start Condition
Symptom
Visible black smoke from the chimney or flue terminal.
Sooting / Rich Combustion
Symptom
Water or condensation is dripping from the furnace or flue connection.
Condensation / Drainage Issue
