Possible Causes

Failed compressor start relay, Open or weak compressor start capacitor, Overheated or open compressor thermal protector, Locked or internally shorted compressor

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the ice maker. Capacitors can hold charge; discharge them safely before handling. If you are not comfortable working around high-voltage components, contact a professional.

  • Check ventilation: Ensure the ice maker has adequate clearance around the condenser area and that the condenser fan is operating. Overheating can trigger compressor protection.
  • Access compressor compartment: Remove the rear lower panel to expose the compressor, start relay, and capacitor.
  • Inspect start relay and capacitor: Look for burn marks, melted plastic, or bulging on the capacitor. If present, replace the start relay and/or capacitor as a set using Brandt-compatible parts.
  • Test compressor windings: With the start components removed and power disconnected, measure resistance between the compressor terminals (C-R, C-S, R-S). Compare to Brandt specifications. Infinite or zero resistance indicates a failed compressor.
  • Check thermal protector: Some models have a clip-on overload protector. Test for continuity when the compressor is cool. Replace if open.
  • Reassemble and test: After replacing faulty parts, reassemble, restore power, and monitor startup. If E3 persists and the compressor hums then trips, the compressor may be mechanically locked and require replacement by a technician.
