Possible Causes

Spilled food or grease on elements, new oven protective oils burning off, insulation or wiring overheating due to a fault.

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: If smoke is heavy or you suspect an electrical burning smell, switch off the oven immediately and isolate from mains.

  • Initial burn-in (new oven): For a new New World oven, run it empty at 200–220°C for 30–60 minutes with good ventilation to burn off manufacturing residues.
  • Clean interior: Once cool, remove shelves and side supports. Clean the cavity, especially around elements, with a non-caustic oven cleaner suitable for enamel.
  • Inspect elements and wiring: If the smell is acrid or plastic-like, remove covers and check for melted wiring or insulation near elements and the control area. Repair any damage before further use.
  • Door seal and insulation: Check that insulation has not fallen onto elements. Reposition or replace as needed.
