Possible Causes

Pellet hopper empty, auger not feeding pellets consistently, excessive ash buildup in firepot, strong wind blowing directly into the cook chamber or exhaust.

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Do not immediately restart if you smell heavy smoke inside the cabinet. Open the lid carefully to vent smoke and confirm there is no active flame or pellet overflow.

  • Step 1 – Check pellet level: Open the Monument hopper and verify there are enough pellets. Refill with dry, high-quality hardwood pellets if low.
  • Step 2 – Inspect firepot: Remove grates and the drip tray. If the firepot is overflowing with unburned pellets, scoop them out into a metal container and vacuum remaining debris. If the pot is empty and full of ash, vacuum thoroughly.
  • Step 3 – Verify auger feed: With the grill cool and the firepot empty, start a feed or prime cycle. Confirm that pellets drop steadily into the firepot. If feed is intermittent, inspect the auger and motor for jams or a slipping coupler.
  • Step 4 – Check combustion fan: During startup, listen for the combustion fan. Weak or no airflow can cause flameouts. Clean ash from around the firepot and ensure the fan intake is not blocked.
  • Step 5 – Wind and lid position: Avoid pointing the exhaust directly into strong prevailing winds. Keep the lid closed during operation to maintain stable combustion.
  • Step 6 – Restart procedure: After clearing excess pellets and ash, follow Monument's manual restart procedure: ensure the firepot is clean, set to SMOKE or low temperature, start the grill with the lid open until ignition is confirmed, then close the lid and set the desired temperature.
