Possible Causes

Open or shorted start capacitor, Mechanical failure of centrifugal switch, Worn motor bearings increasing starting load

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety: Turn off power at the breaker and verify with a non‑contact tester. Capacitors can hold a charge; discharge them safely before handling.

  • Access capacitor: Remove the rear motor cover on the Sta‑Rite pump. Locate the cylindrical start capacitor under a metal or plastic cover.
  • Inspect visually: Look for bulging, leaking, or burnt odor from the capacitor. Any of these signs indicate replacement is needed.
  • Test capacitor (optional): Use a capacitance meter to compare the reading to the µF rating printed on the capacitor. Replace if out of tolerance.
  • Replace capacitor: Discharge the old capacitor by bridging the terminals with a resistor or insulated screwdriver (per safe practice), then remove and install a new capacitor with the same voltage and µF rating.
  • Check motor shaft: Spin the shaft by hand; it should turn freely. If stiff, the bearings may be failing and the motor should be replaced.
  • Reassemble and test: Reinstall covers, restore power, and start the pump. If it still only hums, the start switch or windings may be bad and the motor assembly should be replaced.
