Possible Causes
No fuel supply, failed ignition system (on gasoline), weak battery or starter, faulty engine speed sensor.
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Place the generator in OFF mode and disconnect battery negative before inspecting. Avoid repeated cranking to prevent starter damage.
Steps:
- Check fuel supply: Confirm fuel level in the tank or gas pressure at the regulator. Ensure manual shutoff valves are open. For LP, verify there is no frost on the regulator, indicating freeze-up.
- Inspect air filter: Remove and inspect the engine air filter element. Replace if heavily clogged, as restricted air can prevent starting.
- Battery and starter: Measure battery voltage at rest (should be around 12.6 V for 12 V systems). Clean battery terminals and ensure tight connections at the starter solenoid on the Gillette generator engine. Replace a weak battery.
- Ignition (gasoline/LP): Check spark plug wires for secure connection. Remove a spark plug, inspect for fouling, clean or replace as needed. Verify the ignition coil wiring harness is intact.
- Engine speed sensor: Many Gillette sets use a magnetic pickup at the flywheel. Inspect the sensor tip for metal debris and ensure correct gap per engine spec. Replace if damaged.
- After corrections: Reconnect the battery, clear the OVERCRANK alarm on the controller, and attempt a start. If the unit still fails, professional diagnostics are recommended.
