Possible Causes
Blocked drain pump filter on Defy front panel, Clogged drain hose or standpipe, Foreign object jammed in drain pump impeller, Failed drain pump motor
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the washer before opening any access panels. Water may spill when opening the filter.
- Access the pump filter: On most Defy front-loaders, the drain pump filter is behind a small kick panel or flap at the bottom front. Open the flap, place a shallow tray or towels underneath.
- Drain residual water: If your model has an emergency drain tube, pull it out and drain into a container. Otherwise, slowly loosen the filter cap to let water out gradually.
- Clean the filter: Remove the filter completely and clear out coins, lint, buttons, or debris. Check inside the pump housing with a torch for obstructions around the impeller.
- Inspect drain hose: At the back of the machine, ensure the drain hose is not kinked, crushed, or blocked. Detach from the standpipe or sink connection and flush with water to confirm it is clear.
- Test the pump: Refit the filter securely, reconnect hoses, plug the washer in, and run a drain or spin-only program. If E2 returns and you hear no pump noise, or only a humming sound, the drain pump motor may be defective and should be replaced.
If you smell burning or the pump overheats, stop using the machine and arrange for a Defy technician to replace the pump.
