Possible Causes

Failed freezer evaporator fan motor, Ice buildup around the evaporator fan, Loose or damaged fan wiring harness, Defective main control board fan output

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Disconnect power at the wall outlet or circuit breaker before servicing. Food may begin to thaw, so plan accordingly.

Steps:

  • 1. Confirm airflow issue: With the unit running (before unplugging it), feel for airflow from the freezer vents. Weak or no airflow supports a fan issue.
  • 2. Access freezer evaporator fan: Empty the upper freezer shelves. Remove the rear interior panel (usually held by Phillips screws). Carefully pull the panel forward to expose the evaporator coil and fan assembly.
  • 3. Check for frost/ice: Look for heavy frost or a solid block of ice around the fan or coil. If present, you may have a defrost problem that is causing the fan to stall.
  • 4. Clear ice safely: Unplug the fridge. Use towels to catch water. Use a hair dryer on a low setting to melt ice around the fan and coil. Do not overheat plastic parts.
  • 5. Inspect fan motor: Spin the fan blade by hand. If it binds, wobbles, or feels gritty when you spin it, replace the fan motor.
  • 6. Check wiring: Inspect the fan connector and harness for loose pins, corrosion, or broken wires. Reseat the connector.
  • 7. Test motor electrically: With a multimeter, measure the resistance across the motor terminals. An open circuit (OL) or very high resistance reading indicates a failed motor.
  • 8. Replace evaporator fan motor: If defective, remove the mounting screws, transfer the fan blade to the new motor, and reinstall. Ensure the blade is oriented correctly and is not rubbing against the shroud.
  • 9. If fan and wiring are good: If the fan tests good but does not receive voltage when the compressor is running, the main control board may be faulty and should be tested or replaced by a qualified technician.
