Possible Causes

Clogged drain pump filter, obstructed drain hose, failed drain pump motor, kinked or improperly installed standpipe or house drain

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the washer. Water may spill when opening the pump filter—have towels and a shallow pan ready.

Step-by-step:

  • Access the drain pump: On many Whirlpool front-loaders, remove the lower front access panel (3 screws along the bottom). Tilt the washer back slightly and support it safely if needed.
  • Clean pump filter: Place a pan under the pump clean-out cap. Slowly unscrew the cap to let water drain. Remove debris such as coins, lint, socks, or hair from the filter and pump housing.
  • Inspect impeller: Reach into the pump housing and gently spin the impeller. It should turn freely and not be broken or jammed.
  • Check drain hose: Inspect the hose from the pump to the house standpipe for kinks, clogs, or ice (in cold locations). Detach and flush with water if needed.
  • Verify standpipe height: Ensure the standpipe is at the manufacturer’s recommended height (typically 39–96 inches). A standpipe that is too low or sealed airtight can cause siphoning or poor draining.
  • Test pump electrically: With power disconnected, remove the pump connectors and measure resistance across the pump terminals (typically 10–40 ohms; check your tech sheet). An open or shorted reading indicates a bad pump.
  • Reassemble and test: Reinstall the filter cap securely, reattach the access panel, restore power, and run a drain/spin cycle.

When to call a technician: If the pump hums but does not move water after cleaning, or tests open/shorted, it should be replaced. If you are not comfortable removing panels or handling water near electrical components, contact a professional.
