Possible Causes
High sulfur content in water supply, magnesium anode rod promoting bacterial activity, stagnant water in tank, low hot water usage.
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF power or gas. Allow the water to cool somewhat before draining. Use proper ventilation when using disinfectants.
Steps to check:
- 1. Confirm smell source: Verify the odor is only from hot water taps. If cold water also smells, the issue is with the supply, not just the heater.
- 2. Disinfect tank: Drain several gallons from the tank, then introduce a diluted hydrogen peroxide solution (according to Reliance or local plumbing guidelines) through the hot outlet or anode port. Let it sit for several hours, then flush thoroughly.
- 3. Replace anode rod: Consider replacing the magnesium anode rod with an aluminum/zinc alloy anode designed to reduce odor. Use a Reliance-compatible rod and proper torque.
- 4. Increase usage/temperature temporarily: Temporarily raising the tank temperature (with caution) and running hot water through all fixtures can help kill bacteria. Return to a safe temperature afterward.
- 5. Consider water treatment: If the odor persists, consult a water treatment specialist about whole-house filtration or softening.
Warning: When raising the water temperature above 120°F for disinfection, take steps to prevent scalding and clearly warn occupants.
