Possible Causes
Misaligned rotor and seal, Worn rotor seal causing drag, Incorrect cam installation, Internal valve obstruction
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the unit and shut off the inlet water. Place the softener in bypass to relieve pressure before opening the valve.
- Step 1 – Bypass and depressurize: Move the GE bypass valve to BYPASS. Open a nearby soft water faucet to relieve pressure.
- Step 2 – Inspect rotor and seal: Remove the control head cover and detach the rotor & seal assembly per the GE service instructions. Look for scoring, warping, or debris on the rotor face and seal ring.
- Step 3 – Check alignment: Ensure the rotor shaft is fully seated in the valve body and that the cam is correctly indexed to the rotor (alignment marks should match). Reinstall if misaligned.
- Step 4 – Clean and lubricate: Rinse the rotor and valve cavity with clean water. Remove any sand, iron sludge, or resin beads. Use only GE-approved silicone lubricant on O-rings if specified by the manual.
- Step 5 – Replace worn parts: If the rotor is grooved or the seal is flattened or torn, install a new rotor & seal kit designed for your GE model. Reassemble, return bypass to SERVICE, and run a manual regeneration to verify operation.
Warning: Do not use petroleum-based lubricants; they can damage seals and plastics.
