Possible Causes

Defective valve motor, Jammed rotor/disc assembly, Broken or stripped motor drive gears, Wiring issue between control board and motor

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the softener or switch off the dedicated breaker before opening the control valve cover. Shut off the inlet water and place the unit in bypass to avoid leaks.

Steps to check and correct:

  • 1. Inspect the valve motor: Remove the control valve cover on the Sterling Water softener. Locate the valve motor on the side of the control head. Check for obvious damage, burnt smell, or loose mounting screws.
  • 2. Check wiring harness: Verify the motor harness is fully seated on both the motor and the main control board. Look for pinched or broken wires. Reseat connectors firmly.
  • 3. Manually index the rotor/disc: With power OFF, remove the motor (usually two screws). Gently rotate the rotor/disc or piston assembly by hand. It should move smoothly with moderate resistance. If it is seized or extremely stiff, debris or scale may be jamming the valve.
  • 4. Clear debris: Inspect the rotor/disc and seals for sand, resin beads, or scale. Rinse with clean water and wipe surfaces. Do not use abrasive tools on sealing surfaces.
  • 5. Reassemble and test: Reinstall the motor, restore power, take the unit out of bypass, and initiate a manual regeneration. If Err 01 reappears, the motor or control board is likely defective.
  • 6. Replace parts if needed: If the motor does not run at all when a cycle starts (and you have confirmed power at the board), replace the valve motor. If a new motor still fails to index, the main control board may need replacement and should be handled by a qualified technician.
