Possible Causes
Tripped high-limit thermostat, blocked air vents causing overheating, failed circulation fan, grease buildup on temperature sensor or interior surfaces.
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Unplug the smoker and allow it to cool completely. Hot surfaces and grease can cause burns.
- Check ventilation: Ensure the rear and side vents are not blocked by walls, covers, or debris. Maintain several inches of clearance around the smoker.
- Inspect circulation fan: With the unit unplugged, remove the rear or internal shroud to access the convection/circulation fan. Spin the fan blade by hand; it should move freely without scraping. If seized or noisy, the fan motor assembly should be replaced.
- Clean interior and sensor: Remove racks and the drip tray. Clean heavy grease from the walls, especially around the temperature sensor probe (usually a small metal rod or bulb inside the cavity), using a non-abrasive cleaner and a soft cloth. Built-up grease can insulate the sensor, causing false overheat readings.
- High-limit thermostat reset/replacement: Locate the high-limit thermostat (thermal cutoff) on the outer wall of the cooking chamber or near the element. Some are manual-reset (with a small button in the center); press gently to reset. If it is a one-shot thermal fuse, it must be replaced with the exact rated part if found open.
- Test again: After cleaning and ensuring proper airflow, run the smoker empty on a low setting. If E03 persists, the temperature sensing circuit or control board may be faulty and require replacement.
