Possible Causes
Shorted J1772 cable conductors, Loose or undersized branch circuit wiring to EVSE, Internal contactor contacts welded or damaged, Vehicle requesting current above EVSE rating
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn OFF the dedicated breaker feeding the Leviton EV charger. Do not repeatedly reset a tripping breaker without identifying the cause.
Steps:
- 1. Verify circuit rating: Confirm the EVSE model’s output rating (e.g., 30A, 40A, 48A) and ensure the breaker and wiring size match Leviton’s installation instructions. An undersized circuit can cause nuisance overcurrent trips.
- 2. Inspect branch wiring connections: With power OFF, remove the EVSE front cover only if you are qualified or have an electrician. Check that line and ground conductors are tight in the Leviton terminal block and show no discoloration or melting.
- 3. Examine the charge cable: Look for severe kinks, crushed sections, or burn marks near the strain relief. A short between conductors can trigger E02. If suspected, the cable assembly must be replaced.
- 4. Try a different vehicle: If possible, connect another EV. If E02 only occurs with one vehicle, its onboard charger may be drawing excessive current or shorting internally; contact the vehicle dealer.
- 5. Reset and test: After inspections, restore power at the breaker and attempt a charge. If E02 returns immediately with no vehicle connected, the internal power contactor or current-sensing circuitry on the control board is likely faulty.
- 6. Professional service: Replacement of the internal power contactor or control PCB should be done by a qualified technician familiar with Leviton EVSE products.
