Possible Causes
Insufficient natural gas or LP inlet pressure, Blocked or undersized gas piping, Faulty gas regulator, Clogged fuel filter or demand regulator
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Turn the generator OFF, open the main breaker, and close the manual gas shutoff valve. Work in a well-ventilated area and avoid open flames.
- Check gas supply: For LP, verify the tank level and that the main tank valve is open. For NG, confirm service with the gas utility and that upstream valves are open.
- Inspect piping: Ensure the gas line size meets Kohler installation requirements for the generator’s BTU demand and run length. Undersized piping can cause a pressure drop.
- Regulator inspection: Examine the external gas regulator and the engine-mounted demand regulator for icing, contamination, or damage. Replace if leaking or malfunctioning.
- Fuel filter: If equipped, replace the inline fuel filter according to the Kohler maintenance schedule.
- Pressure test (pro): Have a licensed gas technician measure the inlet pressure at the generator while it's running. Compare it to Kohler’s specified range. Adjust or replace regulators as needed.
Do not attempt to adjust gas regulators without proper training and instruments. Gas leaks and improper pressure can be hazardous.
