Possible Causes

Failed tub heating element, Open thermal cut-out or NTC temperature sensor, Loose or burnt heater wiring connector, Faulty main control board heater relay

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Unplug the washer before removing any panels. Heating components operate at mains voltage.

  • Confirm symptom: Run a hot wash program and feel the door glass after 15–20 minutes. If it remains cold and E5 appears, heating is not occurring.
  • Access heater (advanced): On many Defy front-loaders, the heater is mounted at the bottom rear of the tub and accessed from the rear panel. Remove the back cover with a screwdriver.
  • Inspect wiring: Check the heater terminals and NTC sensor connector for signs of burning, corrosion, or loose connections. Reseat any loose plugs.
  • Test heater resistance: With a multimeter set to ohms, measure across the heater terminals. Typical values are 20–40 Ω. An open circuit (infinite resistance) indicates a failed element that must be replaced.
  • Check NTC sensor: The NTC (temperature sensor) is usually clipped into the heater bracket. Measure its resistance at room temperature (often 5–20 kΩ depending on model). A reading of 0 Ω or infinite suggests failure.

If you are not experienced with electrical testing, do not attempt live measurements. Arrange for a Defy service agent to replace the heater or sensor.
