Possible Causes
Moisture inside charge handle, Damaged insulation in output cable, Faulty internal ground fault current sensor, Water ingress in wallbox enclosure
How to Fix / Troubleshooting
Safety first: Do not continue using the charger if a ground fault is suspected. Turn off the breaker and verify no exposed conductors are energized.
- Step 1 – Visual moisture check: Inspect the charge handle, cable entry, and bottom of the Electrify America wallbox for signs of condensation, water droplets, or corrosion. If wet, leave disconnected and allow to dry for at least 24 hours in a dry environment.
- Step 2 – Check for physical damage: Look for cuts, abrasions, or crushed sections of the cable. Any visible damage to the outer jacket can allow moisture in and cause leakage.
- Step 3 – Reset and retest: After drying and confirming no visible damage, reset the charger by turning the breaker OFF for 5 minutes, then ON. Attempt a short test charge.
- Step 4 – GFCI sensor inspection (qualified only): With power OFF and locked out, open the enclosure and locate the ground fault current transformer (CT) around the output conductors. Ensure the CT connector is firmly seated on the control board and that no wires are pinched or nicked.
- Step 5 – Insulation testing (technician): A licensed electrician should perform an insulation resistance test on the output cable and internal wiring. If leakage is confirmed, replace the affected cable or internal harness.
- Do not bypass: Never bypass or short the ground fault sensor. If the sensor or control board is defective, replace the component with an Electrify America‑approved part.
