Possible Causes

Failed main contactor inside the Rolec charger, burnt contactor coil, loose control wiring between the control PCB and the contactor, faulty contactor feedback circuit on the control PCB.

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Safety first: Isolate the charger at the main supply and verify it is dead before removing the cover. The contactor carries mains voltage.

  • Listen for contactor operation: When you start a charge, you should hear a distinct click from inside the charger. No click suggests the contactor is not energizing; a continuous hum or repeated clicking may indicate a failing coil.
  • Visual inspection: With power isolated and the cover removed, locate the main contactor (usually a DIN-rail mounted relay). Check for heat discoloration, melted plastic, or loose spade/terminal connections on the line and load sides.
  • Check control wiring: Confirm that the low-voltage control wires from the Rolec control PCB to the contactor coil are secure and not damaged. Tug gently to ensure they are firmly clamped.
  • Test coil resistance (qualified person only): Using a multimeter, measure the coil resistance and compare it with the contactor datasheet. An open circuit or very low resistance indicates a failed coil.
  • Replace if defective: If the contactor is burnt, welded, or the coil is open, replace it with the same specification part recommended by Rolec. After replacement, re-torque all terminals to the manufacturer’s specifications and re-test.
