Possible Causes

Vehicle-side charging system fault, Dirty or damaged J1772 pins, Pilot signal tolerance mismatch, Weak contact in J1772 connector

How to Fix / Troubleshooting

Note: If other vehicles charge normally, the issue is likely on the vehicle side.

  • Step 1 – Try another EVSE:
    • Test the vehicle at a different ChargePoint or public Level 2 charger.
    • If it fails there as well, contact your vehicle dealer.
  • Step 2 – Inspect connector:
    • Check the J1772 plug and vehicle inlet for dirt, corrosion, or bent pins.
    • Clean gently with a dry cloth; do not use lubricants.
  • Step 3 – Reseat connection:
    • Unplug and firmly reinsert the connector until it clicks.
    • Ensure the vehicle is in Park and any charge timers are disabled.
  • Step 4 – Firmware updates:
    • Ensure both the charger (via app) and vehicle have the latest firmware.
  • Step 5 – If only this vehicle fails:
    • Document behavior and error messages from the vehicle.
    • Provide this to the vehicle service center; the charger hardware is likely OK.
